Many bait makers and various bait companies rely on this premium mix to produce perfect pop-up boilies time and time again. In this post, you’ll learn how to do it yourself with a step-by-step guide.
Steps
Step 1:
Start by mixing all the desired liquids, such as water, flavours, attractants, liquid foods, preservatives, etc. For the preservative, we recommend using up to approximately 20% of the total liquids. So, if you are using a total of 100ml of liquids, about 20ml should be preservative.
Do not use eggs, as our pop up mix already contains egg compound powder. This allows you to use a wider variety of liquids to make the pop ups even more attractive.
If you haven’t used this pop-up mix before, we recommend starting with a total of 50–100ml of liquid for your first attempt. As with anything new, achieving the right mix consistency may take some trial and error at first.
Step 2:
Once the liquids are well mixed, start adding the dry pop-up mix, optionally enriched with your own additives. Gradually combine the ingredients, aiming for a texture similar to a dense, thick soup.
Step 3:
Continue gradually adding more pop-up mix to the liquid mixture while stirring thoroughly. Aim for a dough-like consistency that is just moist enough to minimally stick to your hands,
Step 4:
Place the dough in a plastic bag and let it rest for approximately 30 minutes.
Step 5:
After the resting period, roll or shape the dough into the desired size. Does the dough feel too dry? Simply add a small amount of extra water and knead until it is fully absorbed.
Step 6:
Next, heat a pan of water to boiling point. Once the water reaches a boil, lower the heat slightly to maintain a gentle simmer, just below boiling. This step is crucial to prevent the dough from swelling.
Step 7:
The cooking time for your dough depends on the size. We recommend a boiling time of 1.5 to 2.5 minutes.
If you add too many pieces at once, the boiling water may cool down. As a general rule, you can simmer around 20–30 pieces at a time.
Step 8:
After boiling, place the pieces on an absorbent towel or a drying rack and allow them to dry and cool.
Step 9:
Finally, the drying time depends on the time of year. In winter, the process may take longer than in summer. Generally, you should allow approximately 1–2 days for drying in summer and 3–4 days in winter, considering factors such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation.
Ensure that you dry your pop ups on a drying rack in a low-humidity environment and avoid direct sunlight. The longer they dry, the harder and lighter they become, increasing their longevity.
Do not use a fan to dry them, as this can cause them to dry too quickly and crack.
Tips
- Since our pop up mix does not require liquid eggs, you can add extra liquids to enhance its attraction.
- The longer you let the pop-ups dry, the harder and more buoyant they become.
- If you need hard pop-ups, you can add egg albumin at a ratio of 3–5% of your pop-up mix.
- To make the pop up boilies even more attractive, you can soak them: coat them with a layer of your chosen liquids, flavours, attractors, etc., without adding water, and allow them to absorb.
- For making wafters, we recommend using approximately 2/3 (by volume) base mix with 1/3 pop-up mix as a guideline.
For example: 2 cups of base mix and 1 cup of pop-up mix. - Always start with a small test batch to ensure your ratios are correct.
